Threshold and Trick
Here's how to give your images a grungy black-and-white effect and a neat little trick you can do that's
not so black and white...just read on ;)
Open up the image that you want to apply the threshold effect to. Its best to use an image not too dark and
not too light. I'm going to be using this one:

Now go to Colors >> Adjust >> Threshold... Set the threshold to 128 and press OK.
And you're done! This is what I got:
Now to do that little effect I was talking about at the beginning of this tutorial...first bring up the original
image again.
Now duplicate it (Layers >> Duplicate) and go ahead and do the threshold steps.
Hit L; this will bring up the Layer palette. Now on the layer which is thresholded change its property to Soft Light.
Once you've done that, it will look like this:
